Gov. Ron DeSantis has directed that flags across Florida be lowered to half-staff Friday as the country marks 25 years since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.
In a memorandum issued Thursday, DeSantis called for U.S. and Florida flags at all state and local government buildings, installations, and grounds to be flown at half-staff. The gesture is meant to honor the 2,977 people who lost their lives in the attacks.
“It has been 25 years since the United States of America was attacked by radical Islamic terrorists on September 11, 2001,” DeSantis wrote. “Our Nation stands united in remembrance of the 2,977 lives lost on that day.”
The Governor has also proclaimed September 11 through 17 as “Patriot Week” in Florida, with Friday designated as “9/11 Heroes’ Day.”
Floridians are encouraged to observe a moment of silence at 8:46 a.m., the exact time American Airlines Flight 11 struck the North Tower of the World Trade Center.
According to a 2021 tally by WPBF, based on records from the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, sixteen of those killed on September 11 were either from Florida or had ties to the state.
Among them was CeeCee Lyles, a Fort Pierce native and former police officer who became a flight attendant. She was aboard United Airlines Flight 93 and called her husband before the hijacked plane crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Others with Florida connections included Johnnie Doctor Jr. of Jacksonville, a Navy information systems technician who died at the Pentagon; Stephen Philip Morris, who lived in Ormond Beach and died at the World Trade Center; and John Talignani of New Port Richey, who was also aboard Flight 93.
Beyond government facilities, DeSantis is encouraging organizations and groups throughout Florida to lower their flags as well.
Friday marks twenty-five years since hijackers crashed four commercial airliners into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and a field in Pennsylvania. The attacks claimed 2,977 lives, making it the deadliest terrorist attack in American history.
Florida, along with every other state, will commemorate 9/11 by lowering flags to half-staff, as required by federal law. Congress passed a joint resolution in December 2001, officially naming September 11 as Patriot Day and directing that the American flag be flown at half-staff throughout the day.
