During a speech in Dallas, Florida gubernatorial candidate Byron Donalds said red states create a model for freedom in the U.S.

“Florida and Texas have something absolutely essential in common,” the Naples Republican said. “Our two states prove every single day that Republican policies, common sense, work for the American people. We keep our governments small and let people live their lives. We cut taxes, slash regulations, and we get government out of your way.”

Donalds was among the high-profile speakers on the first night of the Republican National Convention, held for the first time in a Midterm (and Florida gubernatorial) election cycle. Speaking less than an hour before President Donald Trump took the stage, Donalds promised to continue a conservative tradition in Florida.

“We back the blue and stand unapologetically with our first responders. And when the Democrats show up saying, ‘Let’s put boys in girls locker rooms,’ we say, ‘Hell no!’” Donalds said.

“You see, when you lead with common sense, your people thrive. That’s why tens of thousands of hardworking Americans pack up their families every year to move to Florida, Texas, and Tennessee.”

He also tossed some friendly barbs at the convention’s host state.

“On behalf of Florida, greetings from the number one state in all of America, the great state of Florida,” he said to light boos.

But Donalds threw considerably more aggressive shots at Democratic opponent David Jolly, a one-time Republican.

“This guy wants you to believe that he’s some kind of reasonable, independent voice, but don’t be fooled. He is a career Washington lobbyist who has completely surrendered to radical socialism. He goes on MSNBC, and he says he wants to crush gun culture in America. He defends irreversible gender procedures for minors. This guy chose Dr. Fauci over Florida,” Donalds said.

“He’s proposed a complete takeover of property insurance in Florida— a complete takeover by the government. Think about what that means for your family. When the big storm hits, you know who’s going to get stuck with the bill? You will.”

Donalds serves in Congress now, and said it’s important the GOP keep advancing Trump’s agenda after his term in the U.S. House ends.

“The Democrats, they created the affordability crisis that is hurting hardworking families all across America. Now they’re running, saying that they’re the ones that are going to fix it. But let me ask all of you here tonight: Do you let the arsonist become the firefighter? Because make no mistake, the Democrats created the inflation that’s crippling families,” Donalds said.

“Florida cannot afford David Jolly, and America cannot afford the Democrat Party. You see, to all the Republicans in this arena, to all the Republicans across America, to the patriots who love our nation, we must win this November.”

Democrats in Florida dismissed the remarks at the convention.

“In the Trump-Donalds economy, Floridians are spending nearly $600 more a month on health insurance premiums, facing gas prices upwards of $4, and struggling with skyrocketing grocery bills. Meanwhile, Donalds is living it up in Texas, cheering on the very agenda that’s crushing working families,” said Florida Democratic Party spokesperson Evan Ecklund. “Floridians cannot afford Byron Donalds. He is all in on Donald Trump’s wildly unpopular and costly agenda, Floridians’ best interests be damned.”
