Florida has been in line with national trends this Summer as new jobless claims have been dropping regularly across the country.

Florida has sailed through most of this Summer with little bad news on the jobless front, and yet another report on new unemployment claims is showing those claims declining.
There were 5,033 first-time jobless filings in the state for the week ending Aug. 22. It’s the third week in a row that claims have fallen, according to data released by the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL).
The latest statistics show there was a drop of 647 claims for the third week of August. That’s down from the 5,680 filings for the week ending Aug. 15.
Florida has had a fairly robust Summer when it comes to employment figures. Few weeks have seen those claims increasing.
The Sunshine State has also been in lock step with the national picture for most recent weeks, where those claims have been trending downward.
There were 169,786 new filings for unemployment benefits across the country for the week ending Aug. 22. It’s a nominal dip of 3,231 claims from the week before, or a 1.9% decline. That’s more than DOL analysts had predicted. Those economists had projected there would be a decline of 207 new claims, or a 0.1% drop.
But compared to this time last year, there was a dramatic decrease on the national scale. There were 191,208 claims for the comparable week in 2025.
The steady decline in new Florida claims coincides with a declining unemployment rate this Summer. Both June and July produced falling jobless figures in the Sunshine State.
After about a year of the unemployment rate climbing, the figure leveled off in April and May at 4.8%, according to FloridaCommerce, the state’s economic development bureau. Then, June’s rate dropped to 4.7%. In July, the rate slipped to 4.6%.
In July, there were about 515,000 people without jobs in the state. The labor force stood at about 11.12 million people. Some 10.04 million of those workers were in nonagricultural positions. That’s a monthly increase of about 4,500 jobs. The state gained 41,000 jobs when compared to the same month in 2025.
While the latest unemployment rates are heading downward, they’re still significantly higher than the same time frame in 2025. The jobless figure was 3.9% in July of that year. FloridaCommerce is scheduled to release the August unemployment rate in the third week of September.
