A recent acquisition by AT&T Fiber of another company has expanded the communication giant’s reach across Florida.
AT&T officials say that when they acquire Lumen’s Mass Markets Fiber, it will expand AT&T’s presence in the Sunshine State. AT&T will be able to increase its fiber capacity and Florida, which should increase its fiber customer base in the state by about a third compared to 2025.
“We’re excited to bring AT&T Fiber to more places in Florida and give residents access to the fast, reliable internet that we’re known for,” said Joe York, President of AT&T Florida. “This expansion is about meeting Florida’s growing connectivity needs now and in the future. Our fiber and wireless networks combined help ensure customers stay connected anytime, anywhere.”
As part of the acquisition of Lumen, AT&T Fiber will be available to more than 214,000 new residential and business customers in the Orlando area and in multiple surrounding locales in Central Florida. That translates to about 1 million customers in the Orlando area that will have access to AT&T fiber.
“Fiber internet means more than just faster speeds – it expands opportunities for Florida families,” said Bob O’Malley, Chief External Affairs Officer of the Orlando Economic Partnership. “Closing the digital divide through broadband expansion helps enable our community for future growth and success.”
AT&T has had a steady increase in fiber network customers in recent years. The company instituted its “Gigapower” fiber network in the Panhandle two years ago, which expanded its reach to Fort Walton Beach, Crestview and Okaloosa County. That was a joint venture with BlackRock to expand the service there.
The Lumen acquisition by AT&T was initiated more than a year ago. The deal cost $5.75 billion and covered Lumen communications operations in 11 states. The acquisition included about 1 million fiber customers.
Beyond Central Florida, the Lumen acquisition involved several markets in the state. Other cities added to AT&T service through the deal included Ocala, Naples, Cape Coral and Punta Gorda. Lumen had been operating CenturyLink and Quantum services in those areas.
