Florida is among the best states for military veterans to settle down, according to a new report.
WalletHub this month published its study on the Best and Worst States for Military Retirees. The Sunshine State finished No. 7 in the nation.
Florida was one of only two Southern states to place in the top 10, with South Carolina topping the list.
WalletHub experts used 28 metrics to find states with welcoming approaches for veterans, developing a score for each state. Chief among those elements were economic environment, quality of life and healthcare.
“Transitioning from military to civilian life isn’t easy, but the best states for military retirees make that adjustment as smooth as possible,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “In addition to providing the conditions necessary for our veterans to thrive financially, they also have ample resources for taking care of military retirees’ physical and mental health.”
Florida posted a retired veterans score of 58.02 and ranked No. 4 in the nation for quality of life for military retirees. The Sunshine State was No. 20 in economic environment and No. 21 in healthcare.
Florida was also ranked No. 5 in the nation for Veterans Administration (VA) health facilities per capita, based on the number of veterans in the state, and No. 6 in the nation for VA benefits facilities per capita.
South Carolina earned its No. 1 ranking courtesy of a total score of 64.46. North Dakota ranked No. 2, scoring 60.87. Wyoming was No. 3 with a score of 59.67.
There were six other Southern states in the top 20, with Virginia at No. 11, Alabama at No. 13, North Carolina at No. 15, West Virginia at No. 17, Louisiana at No. 19 and Texas at No. 20.
Oregon placed last at No. 51, with a score of 35.09. Vermont ranked No. 50, with Washington, D.C., at No. 49.
