Will we stand by and watch the deaths of Florida black bears? | Opinion

Animal activist Susan Hargreaves calls on Floridians to attend a Central Florida protest May 4 against a new black bear hunt, the state’s first in a decade. Polls show a large majority of Floridians oppose the hunts.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissioners (FWC) are appointed by the governor, not elected, and they are often hunters.

This is why it came as no surprise to me when the FWC admitted they will go ahead with a trophy bear hunt planned for December 2025, despite acknowledging that Florida’s black bear population has not increased since 2015.
