Keep an eye on the road between now and Election Day: The Byron Donalds tour bus could be headed your way.
As we reported, the Republican gubernatorial candidate is spending the closing stretch on Florida’s open road to “meet voters where they are,” as he put it. That includes meeting them in Wawas, he said at the Plant City tour kickoff, in an anecdotal deviation from his usual remarks.
“I went and got a protein bar and some water, and as we were walking out the door, there was a father and son. They build houses — they frame houses. (It was) early in the morning. One had a couple of orange juices, and the other had a big cup of iced coffee. They were just trying to get to it. They work hard, like everybody else,” Donalds said.
“They saw me there and were like, ‘That can’t be him. He’s in Wawa.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah!’ So we just started talking. I asked them, ‘How are things going?’ The father goes, ‘I’m busy. I’ve got a lot of work. I’m happy, and I get to work with my son. We just love this state. We’re supporting you.’ … That’s what this state is about. It’s about the father and son who build houses here in Hillsborough County.”
Donalds’ running mate, Bryan Ávila, also offered remarks, contrasting his ticket’s “common sense” with the “radical left vision” of Democrat David Jolly.
Special guest and hometown product U.S. Sen. Ashley Moody was on hand, and the former Strawberry Queen had already met voters where they are because she is one of them, as she noted in her introductory remarks.
“I’m pretty sure all y’all in this crowd helped raise me, so you should know who I am by now. It is so great to be with you,” Moody said.
“Once upon a time, a girl from Plant City became a United States Senator because she loved this town, its values, this state and this amazing country — the United States of America. Ever since I have been your Senator, I’ve woken up every day to fight for freedom, for common sense, and to fight for you, my bosses, back home in Florida.”
