As the Panhandle recovers from Hurricane Isaias, Chief Financial Officer Blaise Ingoglia is urging storm victims to use state resources for help with insurance claims and to watch out for fraud.

Ingoglia joined other state leaders Saturday on a tour of storm damage in Destin and Fort Walton Beach. Gov. Ron DeSantis led the tour, flanked by several other officials.

Ingoglia said the Department of Financial Services (DFS) is available to help homeowners navigate the insurance claims process.

“Following Hurricane Isaias, we are prioritizing storm recovery and ensuring that Floridians have the assistance they need to get back on their feet. During this process, it is important to stay aware and vigilant of fraudsters who may try to prey upon vulnerable Floridians for a quick cash grab,” Ingoglia said in a news release.

“My office will be available to help throughout the insurance claims process and take reports of fraudulent activity. I encourage those who have property damage due to Hurricane Isaias to utilize the Consumer Services helpline to get assistance with insurance claims.”

The helpline is 1-877-MY-FL-CFO (1-877-693-5236), and more information is available online.

DFS’s Division of Consumer Services is also setting up insurance assistance hubs in affected areas in the coming days. One of those hubs was established Sunday in Destin at the city’s Parks and Recreation Morgan Sports Center, 4200 Indian Bayou Trail. Experts and advisors are on hand to offer residents tips on how to proceed with insurance claims and issues.

Ingoglia has spent much of what had been a quiet hurricane season urging Floridians to prepare. In May, he launched a preparedness tour of Florida’s metro areas, and DFS employees canvassed coastal communities on foot.

Insurance Commissioner Mike Yaworsky said the Office of Insurance Regulation will also be watching how insurers handle claims.

“The Office of Insurance Regulation is dedicated to safeguarding policyholders following Hurricane Isaias and expects insurers to maintain clear, consistent communication throughout the recovery process. Over the coming weeks, we will be actively monitoring how insurers handle claims,” Yaworsky said.

At least four deaths have been linked to Isaias in Florida and Alabama, according to The Associated Press. Officials are still assessing property damage across the Panhandle.
