Republican candidate for Governor Byron Donalds continues his staunch advocacy for artificial intelligence data centers, arguing they are essential to Florida’s role in space exploration.
“Everybody liked the space race. The commercial space race is going on right now where Florida is dominating. Like, we’re No. 1. We really are. We really are No. 1,” Donalds said in The Villages.
The Naples Congressman invoked one of his earliest supporters, Elon Musk of SpaceX, in explaining how AI helps the state lead the space industry by allowing rockets to land back on Earth and be reused.
“Anybody seen this? It’s amazing. That’s possible because of AI and computing power. Without computing power, you wouldn’t be able to do that. What that’s going to allow us is the ability to truly dominate commercial space, frankly, out of Florida, over everybody else in the Western Hemisphere,” Donalds predicted.
Donalds likened data centers to “industrial infrastructure,” arguing that skeptics will be proven to be as wrong as those who opposed nuclear power adoption decades ago.
“The United States stopped building nuclear reactors 50 years ago. And we stopped building them because of political dogma from the environmentalist left who said they were concerned about nuclear fallout and nuclear rods, and what happens if the reactors melt down. And as a nation, we put in regulatory policy that made it impossible to build nuclear power plants. It’s our technology. We made it,” Donalds said.
“So now we’re to the point where now I think America is coming back around and saying, well, why did we stop building nuclear power plants? If everybody’s concerned about power, we already know how to do that.”
Donalds continues to defend his data center stance against Democrat David Jolly, who is calling for a moratorium and focusing campaign resources into linking Donalds with the controversial construction of the facilities.
