Tampa Electric customers will catch a break on their power bills sooner than expected.
The utility announced Tuesday that it will remove a storm recovery surcharge from customer bills effective Aug. 1, a month earlier than originally planned, resulting in an 11% to 12% reduction in monthly electric costs for most residential and small-business customers. The change will lower bills by roughly $20 per 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity used.
The surcharge was approved by the Florida Public Service Commission in March 2025 to allow Tampa Electric to recover more than $400 million in restoration costs following Florida’s historic 2024 hurricane season. The fee was spread over 18 months to lessen the impact on customers and was expected to remain in place through August, with removal beginning in September.
Tampa Electric now says those costs will be fully recovered sooner than anticipated, allowing the charge to expire a month early.
“This relief reflects Tampa Electric’s ongoing commitment to help our customers with their payments whenever we can,” Tampa Electric President and CEO Archie Collins said. “We understand everyone is feeling the pressure of higher prices, from the grocery store to the gas pump, and we heard you. It’s important to us that you receive this benefit as soon as possible.”
The surcharge stemmed from one of Florida’s most damaging hurricane seasons in recent memory. Hurricane Helene brought extensive flooding to West Central Florida before Hurricane Milton struck days later, causing widespread damage from downed trees and other storm impacts. Tampa Electric deployed approximately 9,500 out-of-state utility workers during the recovery effort, helping restore power across its service territory following both storms.
Customers enrolled in Tampa Electric’s Budget Billing program may not see the full reduction immediately because the program is designed to smooth monthly bill fluctuations over time. The utility said those customers will experience a more gradual adjustment as the surcharge rolls off.
The rate reduction arrives as utility costs remain a concern for households facing persistent inflation and higher costs for everyday necessities. While the expiration of the surcharge does not affect base electric rates, it will provide immediate relief for the approximately 870,000 customers Tampa Electric serves across West Central Florida.
Company officials also encouraged customers experiencing financial hardship to contact Tampa Electric about payment arrangements and assistance programs. The utility said it continues to offer support options for qualifying customers struggling to keep up with electric bills.
