The Interstate 95-U.S. 1 interchange road construction project is breaking ground in 2026, one year ahead of schedule, Gov. Ron DeSantis announced.

DeSantis gave a road construction update on Volusia County’s Ormond Beach project at a news conference alongside Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) Secretary Jared Perdue.

“This interchange was originally constructed in the 1960s. It’s one of our oldest on our state highway system. This project will modernize and transform the interchange,” DeSantis said. “You’re going to have more capacity. You’re going to have better traffic flow, less congestion, and that’s something that is certainly needed.”

The project entails adding three new bridges and redesigning the loop ramps on I-95 “to make it easier and safer for drivers entering and exiting the interstate,” according to FDOT’s website. “By extending the northbound off-ramp and southbound on-ramp, drivers will have more time to adjust their speed for safer access to and from I-95. Both I-95 off-ramps will be widened to increase safety and capacity.”

DeSantis has been touting 20 major road construction projects throughout the state as part of his $7 billion Moving Florida Forward infrastructure plan that DeSantis’ administration wants to prioritize.

“These wouldn’t even be on anybody’s radar for the rest of this decade had we not done our Moving Florida Forward initiative,” DeSantis said Thursday. “We’ve put a lot of resources into it, and it’s something that is not only the right thing to do but really necessary to do.”

DeSantis said FDOT has saved $70 million on the latest project, though neither DeSantis nor Perdue went into further detail to explain what FDOT is doing differently to save money.

“It’s amazing how fast we went from concept to construction under the Governor’s leadership. It’s really remarkable and unheard anywhere else across the country,” Perdue said.

During his remarks, DeSantis also went off topic and mocked House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries with an impression of Jeffries’ voice.
