Florida’s death penalty is spiraling out of control | Opinion

Florida leads the nation in death row exonerations, where people on death row have later been found innocent of their crimes. And yet, the Legislature is trying to make it easier to kill.

This legislative session, seemingly inspired by the new, death-friendly Trump administration, several proposals pending in the Florida Legislature seek to further broaden and undermine the constitutionality of our capital punishment system.

Two proposals seek to add aggravating factors to Florida’s capital sentencing scheme — one for capital crimes committed at certain gatherings and the other for capital crimes committed against heads of state. Aggravating factors are crucial to the constitutionality of a capital sentencing scheme.
